Russia, 2020, 12 Minutes
Police officers break up opposition demonstrations in Moscow. They look like cosmonauts, kitted out with weapons and uniforms. They hunt and beat down the peaceful demonstrators, their massed ranks far outweighing their helpless opponents. And they refuse to stop even when these people lie defenceless on the ground. It is excessive and it is inexorable. The graduate film by director Danila Gulin encompasses six rallies and 18 months of production – interrupted by the filmmaker being sent to prison on three separate occasions. The material is set to music by Teenage Arab.
