Fleißige Arbeiter*innenhände, Modenschau und Kanonenschüsse, Handprothesen, dazwischen nascht das Gutbürgertum im Speisewagen Snacks. In diesem Dokumentarfilm, bestehend nur aus Archivmaterial, sind alle Bilder wohl komponiert zusammengesetzt. Schnell entwickeln die Motive einen Sog, das Gesehene wird politisch: Hitlergrüße und hunderttausende Soldat*innen, die mit der Bahn nach Hause oder in die Kaserne fahren. Deportationen, dokumentierte Angriffe der Luftwaffe. Es sind Bilder von Leben und Tod, die wertfrei nebeneinander stehen. Sie bilden kunstvolle Glieder einer Collage, verschmelzen zwischen den Schienen zu einer Geschichte. TRAINS zeichnet ein kollektives Porträt der Menschen im Europa des 20. Jahrhunderts und fängt ihre Hoffnungen, Wünsche, Dramen und Tragödien ein.

Industrious workers’ hands, fashion shows and cannon fire, hand prostheses — meanwhile, the bourgeoisie snacks in the dining car. This documentary, composed entirely of archival footage, arranges its images with meticulous care. Soon the motifs exert a pull: what we see takes on a political charge — Nazi salutes, hundreds of thousands of soldiers travelling by train, homeward or back to the barracks; deportations, air raids. Images of life and death stand side by side without judgment. They form the artful links of a collage, merging along the rails into one story. TRAINS sketches a collective portrait of 20th-century Europe, capturing its hopes, desires, dramas and tragedies.

Pracowite dłonie robotników i robotnic, pokaz mody i strzały z armaty, protezy rąk, a pomiędzy tymi obrazami mieszczaństwo delektuje się przekąskami w wagonach restauracyjnych. Film składa się w całości z udanie zmontowanych ze sobą filmowych materiałów archiwalnych. Motywy szybko wpadają w wir, obrazy nabierają politycznego charakteru – nazistowski gest pozdrowienia i tysiące żołnierzy jadących koleją do domu lub do koszar. Deportacje, udokumentowane ataki Luftwaffe. Obrazy życia i śmierci przeplatają się ze sobą bez poddawania ich ocenie. Tworzą misterny kolaż, stapiając się pomiędzy torami w jedną historię. POCIĄGI to zbiorczy portret europejskiej ludzkości XX wieku, ukazujący ich nadzieje, życzenia, dramaty i tragedie.

Maciej J. Drygas ist ein renommierter Film- und Radioregisseur, Drehbuchautor, Produzent und Professor an der Polnischen Nationalen Filmhochschule in Łódź. Seine Werke wurden mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter dem Preis der Europäischen Filmakademie für den besten Dokumentarfilm für Hear MyCry (1991), dem Prix Italia für die Radiodokumentation Last Will (1992), dem Grand Prix beim Internationalen Fernsehfestival Monte Carlo für State of Weightlessness (1995) und dem Preis für den besten abendfüllenden Dokumentarfilm beim Cinema Verité Festival in Teheran für Abu Haraz (2013). Drygas schrieb außerdem das Libretto für die Oper Qudsja Zaher, die 2014 für die International Opera Awards in London nominiert wurde. Er ist Initiator und Gründer des Home Movie Archive im Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Warschau. Seine Filme und Radiodokumentationen wurden in ganz Europa sowie in Kanada, Japan, Brasilien, Südafrika, Neukaledonien und Australien ausgestrahlt.

Maciej J. Drygas is a renowned film and radio director, screenwriter, producer, and professor at the Polish National Film School in Łódź. His works have won numerous awards, including the European Film Academy Award for Best Documentary for Hear My Cry (1991), the Prix Italia for the radio documentary Last Will (1992), the Grand Prix at the Monte Carlo International Television Festival for State of Weightlessness (1995), and the award for best feature-length documentary at the Cinema Verité Festival in Tehran for Abu Haraz (2013).Drygas also wrote the libretto for the opera Qudsja Zaher, which was nominated for the International Opera Awards in London in 2014. He is the initiator and founder of the Home Movie Archive at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Warsaw. His films and radio documentaries have been broadcast across Europe as well as in Canada, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, New Caledonia, and Australia.

Maciej J. Drygas to renomowany reżyser filmowy i radiowy, scenarzysta, producent i Wykładowca PWSFTviT w Łodzi. Jego dzieła nagrodzono wieloma wyróżnieniami, w tym Europejską Nagrodą Filmową dla najlepszego filmu dokumentalnego za Usłyszcie mój krzyk (1991), Prix Italia w kategorii słuchowisk radiowych za Testament (1992), Grand Prix na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Twórczości Telewizyjnej w Monte Carlo za Stan nieważkości (1995) oraz nagrodą za najlepszy pełnometrażowy film dokumentalny na Festiwalu Filmów Dokumentalnych Cinema Verité w Teheranie za Abu Haraz (2013). Drygas napisał libretto do opery Qudsja Zaher, która w 2014 roku była nominowana do International Opera Awards w Londynie. Jest inicjatorem i założycielem Polskiego Archiwum Filmów Domowych w Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie. Jego filmy pokazywano w całej Europie, a także w Kanadzie, Japonii, Brazylii, Afryce Południowej, Nowej Kaledonii i Australii.
