The sociological text “La mala vida en Madrid” (The Poor Life in Madrid) was published more than a century ago, prompting debate about what it means to live in a manner that shuns social norms. Striking, loaded with cliché and brazenly unapologetic, the text’s study of class, sexuality and social behaviour as part of big-city life is interpreted ironically by the film, which applies these ways of life – or lifestyles – to the Spanish capital as it exists today. Relying on a Super 8 aesthetic and intertitles, the film manages to establish a close connection while maintaining a historical distance from the subjects under scrutiny.
