Romania, 2019, 16 Minutes
The complex topic of economic migration – based on a specific case study of Romania – is deconstructed in a video essay: Capitalist consumption is propagated and reproduced by the mainstream media as a natural, universal lifestyle. Romania exports cheap labour to Western Europe and imports workers that are cheaper still from neighbouring countries further East. According to the filmmakers, the artistic process can be seen as flexible, formless, transnational and traversing media formats – exploring the boundary between visual art and social sciences.
Silvia Amancei and Bogdan Armanu (*1991), Iași and Timișoara, are an artist couple working together since 2012. Their artistic practice explores the intersection between social studies and visual art.
