Russia, 2019, 24 Minutes
In Russia, more than one thousand new sacred structures are built each year. In the Southern Ural alone – a place of just 8,000 residents – there have been three in the past two years. Nagaibak Elena Vasilieva, a native of the region and resident of a village called Paris, is building an Orthodox church with her own two hands. Her purpose in life is to see it open. When it happens, it’ll be the most significant event witnessed by the village for a long time. The film documents a key phase of the building process, the placement of a cross on top of the church, and looks at the villagers through the lens of their prayers and sacraments. The camera observes them in the period leading up to the ceremonial opening.
