Spain/Gambia, 2020, 30 Minutes
Fishmeal factories, overfishing, migration: Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa, yet the rate of migration of its citizens to Europe is one of the highest. The nation, which stretches along the banks of the river from which it takes its name, is entirely dependent on fisheries. But what can its people do when giant trawlers are exhausting fish stocks and the fish end up in fishmeal factories that export their goods to Europe and China? This film follows three protagonists – Abou, Mariama and Paul – and shows the very real effects that global and economic changes, paired with ocean overfishing, are having on their day-to-day lives.
