“The world is not always beautiful,” my mother says. My child wakes up. My parents smile at each other and recount a story.

On silence and how it breaks, on things that were not meant to be but were: the house where two people never wanted to live, the mental illness they never wanted to encounter, the children they didn't want to have, the nuclear war that never came. The director observes as her parents look back on the constraints and inflexible nature of family life in a small Catholic German town. Family history is skilfully woven into a topography of landscapes scarred by lignite mining, drawing links to contemporary German history since the late 1980s.

MARIAN MAYLAND (born 1988 in Bocholt) has worked intensively with various forms of documentary narration since 2015. Her works have been shown in exhibitions and at festivals such as the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, IDFA Amsterdam, and the Hamburg International Short FIlm Festival.
